RESUMO

Thin-film polarizing beam splitters (PBSs) fulfill a pivotal role in laser beam splitting, modulation, shaping and isolation. In this study, a high-reliability infrared broadband thin-film PBS was developed. To correct for tensile stress in Ge/YbF3 multilayer coatings, ZnSe compensation layers were incorporated in the multilayer design. The effects of different symmetrical periods on the spectral properties of the infrared PBS were systematically discussed. The infrared PBS operated at 45° and in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) band. Using the percent of optical extrema monitoring (POEM) strategy combined with the high-temperature optical constants (HTOC) of Ge film, the infrared PBS was precisely fabricated on ZnSe substrates. Subsequently, the spectral performance and film reliability of the infrared PBS were carefully characterized. Specifically, the transmittance of p-polarization surpassed 96%, while the extinction ratio exceeded 100:1 within the 10.6 ± 0.15 µm band. The infrared PBS demonstrated commendable environmental reliability, in addition to exhibiting excellent spectral characteristics.

RESUMO

To investigate the distribution and characteristics of lymphatic vessels within the central nervous system, we focus on the meninges of the spinal cord and brain parenchyma in mice. Additionally, we aim to provide experimental methods for obtaining optimal imaging and clear structures of lymphatic vessels, while optimizing the perfusion parameters to improve histomorphological quality. Male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into four groups, with each group assigned a specific perfusion parameter based on perfusion volumes and temperatures. Immunofluorescence staining of lymphatics and blood vessels was performed on both meningeal and the brain tissue samples. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance to compare the groups, and a significant level of P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Our study reports the presence of lymphatic vessels in the meninges of the spinal cord and brain parenchyma in mice. We highlight the crucial role of high perfusion volume of paraformaldehyde with low temperature in fixation for achieving optimal results. We provide experimental methods for obtaining optimal imaging and clear structures of lymphatic vessels in the meninges of the spinal cord and brain parenchyma in mice, which contribute to our understanding of the distribution and characteristics of lymphatic vessels within the central nervous system. Further research is warranted to explore the functional implications of these lymphatic vessels and their potential therapeutic significance in neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases.

RESUMO

HfO2 films are widely used for optical coatings due to the high refractive index and low absorption, especially in the ultraviolet (UV) band. In this work, HfO2 film samples were prepared with the optimized assistant source power and deposition temperature by dual-ion beam sputtering (DIBS), followed by annealing treatments in vacuum and atmosphere, respectively. For samples with different annealing temperatures from 200 to 450 °C, the microstructure, morphology, film stress and optical properties from 200 to 1000 nm were systematically investigated. A monoclinic phase, a refractive index inhomogeneity along the film thickness and an absorption of shoulder-shape in the 250-300 nm band were found in the as-deposited samples. For samples annealed in vacuum, 400 °C annealing leaded to more oxygen defects, which in turn caused aggravated UV absorption. For samples annealed in atmosphere, the shoulder-shaped absorption weakened obviously above 300 °C annealing, which was suspected due to the reduction of oxygen defects during the crystallization process with sufficient oxygen. Scattering loss was investigated and found negligible for as-deposited and annealed samples. Additionally, film stress varied from compressive state to tensile state with increasing annealing temperature, and the zero-stress temperature is between 300-350 °C, which is due to the obvious crystallization behavior. Production methods and physical mechanisms for low absorption and scattering loss DIBS deposited HfO2 films were proposed and discussed in detail.

RESUMO

Broader spectra, lower reflectivity and higher reliability are the performance requirements for broadband antireflective (BBAR) films. In this work, a BBAR film structure was proposed, which maintains extremely low reflectivity, ultra-wide spectra, low polarization sensitivity and practical reliability. The BBAR film consists of a dense multilayer interference stack on the bottom and a nano-grass-like alumina (NGLA) layer with a gradient low refractive index distribution on the top. The film was deposited by atomic layer deposition, while the NGLA layer was formed by means of a hot water bath on Al2O3 layer. The top NGLA layer has extremely high porosity and ultra-low refractive index, along with extremely fragile structure. To surmount the fragility of NGLA layer, a sub-nano layer of SiO2 was grown by atomic layer deposition to solidify its structure and also to adjust the refractive index with different thicknesses of SiO2. Finally, in the wide wavelength range of 400-1100 nm, the average transmittance of the double-sided coated fused quartz reaches 99.2%. The absorption, light scattering, reliability and polarization characteristics of BBAR films were investigated. An optimized BBAR film with low polarization-sensitivity and improved reliability was realized, which should be potentially promising for application in optical systems.

RESUMO

Transparent conductors (TC) have been widely applied in a wide range of optoelectronic devices. Nevertheless, different transparent spectral bands are always needed for particular applications. In this work, indium tin oxide (ITO)-free TCs with tunable transparent bands based on the film structure of TiO2/Ag/AZO (Al-doped ZnO) were designed by the transfer matrix method and deposited by magnetron sputtering. The transparent spectra and figure-of-merit (FOM) were effectively adjusted by precisely controlling the Ag layer's thickness. The fabricated as-deposited samples exhibited an average optical transmittance larger than 88.3% (400-700 nm), a sheet resistance lower than 7.7 Ω.sq-1, a low surface roughness of about 1.4 nm, and mechanical stability upon 1000 bending cycles. Moreover, the samples were able to hold optical and electrical properties after annealing at 300 °C for 60 min, but failed at 400 °C even for 30 min.

RESUMO

An abnormal glutamate signaling pathway has been proposed in the mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, less is known about the involvement of alterations of glutaminase 1 (GLS1) in the pathophysiology of ASD. We show that the transcript level of GLS1 is significantly decreased in the postmortem frontal cortex and peripheral blood of ASD subjects. Mice lacking Gls1 in CamKIIα-positive neurons display a series of ASD-like behaviors, synaptic excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) imbalance, higher spine density, and glutamate receptor expression in the prefrontal cortex, as well as a compromised expression pattern of genes involved in synapse pruning and less engulfed synaptic puncta in microglia. A low dose of lipopolysaccharide treatment restores microglial synapse pruning, corrects synaptic neurotransmission, and rescues behavioral deficits in these mice. In summary, these findings provide mechanistic insights into Gls1 loss in ASD symptoms and identify Gls1 as a target for the treatment of ASD.

RESUMO

Optimizing the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process of films is particularly important in preparing multilayer interference films. In this work, a series of Al2O3/TiO2 nano-laminates with a fixed growth cycle ratio of 1:10 were deposited on Si and fused quartz substrates at 300 °C by ALD. The optical properties, crystallization behavior, surface appearance and microstructures of those laminated layers were systematically investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry, spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscope and transmission electron microscopy. By inserting Al2O3 interlayers into TiO2 layers, the crystallization of the TiO2 is reduced and the surface roughness becomes smaller. The TEM images show that excessively dense distribution of Al2O3 intercalation leads to the appearance of TiO2 nodules, which in turn leads to increased roughness. The Al2O3/TiO2 nano-laminate with a cycle ratio 40:400 has relatively small surface roughness. Additionally, oxygen-deficient defects exist at the interface of Al2O3 and TiO2, leading to evident absorption. Using O3 as an oxidant instead of H2O for depositing Al2O3 interlayers was verified to be effective in reducing absorption during broadband antireflective coating experiments.

RESUMO

This experiment investigated the underlying mechanism of ultrasonic-assisted stewing to enhance the aroma intensity of chicken broth by measuring fat content, oil droplet sizes, zeta potential, viscosity, surface protein loading, lipid oxidation, and aroma compound concentrations. As the thermo-ultrasound time increased, the fat content increased from 0.3 % to 1.2 %, resulting in a milky white appearance. After 1 h of thermo-ultrasound, the broth had the smallest particle size and the highest surface protein load, viscosity, and emulsion stability, as well as the highest total amount of aroma-active compounds of 314.70 ng/mg. With the further extension of thermo-ultrasound time, lipid oxidation increased, but the stability of chicken broth decreased, lowering the content of aroma-active compounds. These outcomes suggested that thermo-ultrasound could enhance the aroma intensity of chicken broth by increasing the fat content and the emulsion stability of the broth.

RESUMO

PVR/TIGIT and PD-L1/PD-1 axes play essential roles in tumor immune evasion and could be potential targets for combined immunotherapy. We aimed to evaluate the expression status of the above-mentioned immune markers in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), and investigate their survival impact and relevance with the immune microenvironment and clinicopathological features. We retrospectively collected specimens from 190 LUSC patients, who underwent pulmonary surgeries, and we performed immunohistochemistry assays of PVR, TIGIT, PD-L1, PD-1 and CD8. In our cohort, the positive rate of PVR was 85.8%, which was much higher than the positive rate of PD-L1 at 26.8%. A total of 32 (16.8%) patients demonstrated co-expression of PVR/PD-L1. High TIGIT density was correlated with positive PD-L1 expression, high PD-1 density, and high CD8 density (PD-L1, P=0.033; PD-1, P<0.001; CD8, P<0.001), and positive PVR expression was correlated with positive PD-L1 expression (P=0.046). High TIGIT density and high PVR/TIGIT expression were correlated with advanced TNM stage (TIGIT density, P=0.020; PVR/TIGIT expression, P=0.041). Patients with positive PVR expression, high TIGIT density, high PVR/TIGIT expression and PVR/PD-L1 co-expression exhibited a significantly worse prognosis (PVR, P=0.038; TIGIT, P=0.027; PVR/TIGIT, P=0.014; PVR/PD-L1, P=0.018). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that PVR/PD-L1 co-expression (Hazard ratio [HR], 1.756, 95% CI, 1.152-2.676, P=0.009) was an independent prognostic factor in LUSC patients. In conclusion, we demonstrated the expression status of PVR/TIGIT and PD-L1/PD-1 in LUSC. PVR/PD-L1 co-expression was an independent prognostic factor in LUSC patients and may serve as a potential predictive biomarker for dual-targeting immunotherapy.

RESUMO

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a cause of disability and death worldwide, but there are currently no specific treatments for this condition. Release of excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the injured brain leads to a series of pathological changes; thus, eliminating ROS could be a potential therapeutic strategy. Herein, we synthesized insulin-incubated ultrasmall palladium (Pd@insulin) clusters via green biomimetic chemistry. The Pd@insulin clusters, which were 3.2 nm in diameter, exhibited marked multiple ROS-scavenging ability testified by the theoretical calculation. Pd@insulin could be rapidly excreted via kidney-urine metabolism and induce negligible adverse effects after a long-time treatment in vivo. In a TBI mouse model, intravenously injected Pd@insulin clusters aggregated in the injured cortex, effectively suppressed excessive ROS production, and significantly rescued motor function, cognition and spatial memory. We found that the positive therapeutic effects of the Pd@insulin clusters were mainly attributed to their ROS-scavenging ability, as they inhibited excessive neuroinflammation, reduced cell apoptosis, and prevented neuronal loss. Therefore, the ability of Pd@insulin clusters to effectively eliminate ROS, as well as their simple structure, easy synthesis, low toxicity, and rapid metabolism may facilitate their clinical translation for TBI treatment.

RESUMO

Depression is one of the most fatal mental diseases, and there is currently a lack of efficient drugs for the treatment of depression. Emerging evidence has indicated oxidative stress as a key pathological feature of depression. We targeted reactive oxygen species (ROS) and synthesized CeO2@BSA nanoclusters as a novel antidepression nanodrug via a convenient, green, and highly effective bovine serum albumin (BSA) incubation strategy. CeO2@BSA has ultrasmall size (2 nm) with outstanding ROS scavenging and blood-brain barrier crossing capacity, rapid metabolism, and negligible adverse effects in vitro and in vivo. CeO2@BSA administration alleviates depressive behaviors and depression-related pathological changes of the chronic restraint stress-induced depressive model, suggesting promising therapeutic effects of CeO2@BSA for the treatment of depression. Our study proved the validity by directly using nanodrugs as antidepression drugs instead of using them as a nanocarrier, which greatly expands the application of nanomaterials in depression treatment.

RESUMO

A reaction chamber of atomic layer deposition (ALD) was developed for simultaneous coating on the inner and outer surfaces of a large-size and strongly curved glass bowl. The inner surface ALD process was in a showerhead reaction mode and the outer surface ALD process was in a cross-flow reaction mode. Blue reflection (BR) film of 400 nm wavelength and broadband antireflection (BBAR) film of 400-700 nm wavelength were coated on different glass bowls by ALD. The spectral uniformity of both coated bowls was studied. The measured spectra at multiple positions of the glass bowl with the BBAR coating show better spectral uniformity along the circumference than the depth. The spectral deviation is mainly caused by the non-uniformity of the film on the outer surface (<±3%), and the film on the inner surface has good uniformity along both the circumference and the depth (<±0.7%). The growth rate of the outer film was reduced by 10% on average compared to that of the inner film due to the different gas flow mode.

RESUMO

Dynamically tunable ultra-narrowband perfect absorbers are important to next-generation active photonic devices. A composite structure of a graphene pair and a microcavity with Bragg mirrors are proposed for this purpose. Based on the electrically controllable doping of graphene and critical coupling of the incident light, the microcavity-graphene composite structure achieves peak absorptance higher than 99.5%, a relative peak width ($\Delta \lambda /{\lambda _0}$) smaller than 1.1%, and a modulation depth larger than 92.0% throughout the visible-to-mid-infrared range, surpassing other structures in comprehensive performance. By changing the number of the dielectric pairs in the Bragg mirrors, the device can become an amplitude or a spectral modulator. The results are based on the optical constants from experiment data, including the surface conductivity of graphene with relatively low mobility, so they are more useful in practical situations.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: De Winter et al first described a new ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)-equivalent pattern associated with acute occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Studies show that this pattern has a positive predictive value of 95.2% to 100%. However, some cases of non-STEMI, caused by acute right coronary artery or LAD diagonal branch occlusion, have been reported, which exhibit electrocardiogram (ECG) changes similar to the de Winter pattern. Few cases of de Winter ECG pattern caused by left circumflex artery (LCX) stenosis have been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department 12 hours after suffering from oppressive chest pain and diaphoresis. The patient had a history of diabetes and smoking. An initial ECG showed atrial fibrillation, upsloping ST-segment depression at the J point, followed by peaked, positive T waves in leads V2 to V6 and slight ST-segment elevation in lead aVR, with poor R-wave progression. Coronary angiography showed tubular stenosis (up to 95%) of the proximal portion of the LCX. DIAGNOSIS: LCX stenosis led to a diagnosis of non-STEMI. INTERVENTIONS: Left coronary artery stenosis was successfully treated with angioplasty and insertion of a drug-eluting stent. OUTCOMES: The patient's chest pain resolved completely after stent implantation. No myocardial infarction occurred during the 6-month follow-up period. LESSONS: De Winter ECG pattern cannot be presumed to be associated with LAD stenosis and 18-lead ECG is required to support the identification of the "criminal" artery and to rule out posterior myocardial infarction.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Primary aldosteronism (PA) with hypokalemia increases the risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Cases of PA with malignant arrhythmia as the first symptom have been reported. The role of severe hypokalemia in triggering malignant ventricular arrhythmia is well documented. However, few cases of PA with mild hypokalemia that presented with life-threatening ventricular tachycardia have been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 74-year-old man was admitted to our hospital 25 hours after suffering from syncope caused by ventricular tachycardia without chest pain. Electrocardiogram showed ST segment depression and T wave inversion in leads III, avF, V4-V6. Mild QT prolongation was observed during sinus rhythm. Blood tests showed mild hypokalemia and elevated plasma aldosterone level. Abdominal computed tomography showed a nodule in the left adrenal gland. Coronary angiography revealed stenosis in the right coronary artery. DIAGNOSIS: Prolonged QT interval, hypokalemia, high level plasma aldosterone, a nodule in the left adrenal gland and right coronary artery stenosis led to a diagnosis of aldosterone hyperplasia and adrenal nodule with ischemic heart disease. INTERVENTION: Intravenous potassium and magnesium were administered to correct hypokalemia and a stent was implanted in the right coronary artery for vascularization. A prescription aldosterone receptor antagonist, spironolactone, was prescribed for hyperaldosteronemia. OUTCOMES: During 6 months of follow-up, no episodes of ventricular tachycardia or syncope occurred, and serum potassium level remained normal. LESSONS: In patients with ventricular tachycardia and mild hypokalemia, physicians need to consider that PA and ischemia heart disease may be one of the possible causes of electrical storm.

RESUMO

A new method for measuring the dielectric functions change with the thickness of nanometal thin films was proposed. To confirm the accuracy and reliability of the method, a nano-thin wedge-shaped gold (Au) film with continuously varied thicknesses was designed and prepared on K9 glass by direct-current-sputtering (DC-sputtering). The thicknesses and the dielectric functions in the wavelength range of 300-1100 nm of the nano-thin Au films were obtained by fitting the ellipsometric parameters with the Drude and critical points model. Results show that while the real part of the dielectric function (ϵ1) changes marginally with increasing film thickness, the imaginary part (ϵ2) decreases drastically with the film thickness, approaching a stable value when the film thickness increases up to about 42 nm. This method is particularly useful in the study of thickness-dependent optical properties of nano-thin film.

RESUMO

An approach extracting information of both optical monitoring signal and phase thickness of deposited layer on a trace diagram is proposed. Realtime fitting and calculation are performed to get both practical thickness and refractive index of deposited layer with the assist of quartz crystal monitoring for keeping steady rate of deposition. Monitoring error of thickness using this approach is analyzed. It was used to obtain the refractive indices and thickness of Ge layer and SiO layer in in situ measurement mode, and the results were compared with those of ex-situ spectral measurement using infrared spectrometer. The effectiveness of the proposed monitoring method was verified by fabricating narrow bandpass filter consisting of quarter-wave and non-quarter-wave layers.

RESUMO

Cut-off filters are usually operating at oblique incidence and exhibit polarization dependence properties. We propose a simple approach to design cut-off filters with low linear polarization sensitivity (LPS) based on dielectric-metal-dielectric (DMD) stacks. The designing method is derived from the theory of optical film characteristic matrix. The admittance loci of the film are adjusted to achieve similar spectral properties of s- and p-polarized light at oblique incidence. Different film structures are designed non-polarizing at different angles of incidence with the method. The results show that the designing method is efficient for designing non-polarizing cut-off filters, which are widely used in non-polarizing optical system.

RESUMO

A path-folded infrared image spectrometer with five sub-gratings and five linear-array detectors was applied to a broadband optical monitoring (BOM) system for thin film deposition. Through in situ BOM, we can simultaneously acquire the thickness and refractive index of each layer in real time by fitting the measured spectra, and modify the deposition parameters during deposition process according to the fitting results. An effective data processing method was proposed and applied in the BOM process, and it shortened the data processing time and improved the monitoring efficiency greatly. For demonstration, a narrow band-pass filter (NBF) at 1540 nm with ~10 nm full width at half-maximum (FWHM) had been manufactured using the developed BOM system, and the results showed that this BOM method was satisfying for monitoring deposition of thin film devices.

RESUMO

A new compact infrared spectrometer without any mechanical moving elements has been designed and constructed using a two-dimensional InGaAs array detector and 10 sub-gratings. The instrument is compact, with a double-folded optical path configuration. The spectra are densely 10-folded to achieve 0.07-nm spectral resolution and a 2-ms data acquisition time in the 1450- to 1650-nm wavelength region, making the instrument useful for real-time spectroscopic data analyses in optical communication and many other fields.
